Hi my name is Tobia Jones thanks for this opportunity to connect, remember and exchange!
In 1793 my great great great great great grandparent D John Cleugh was working at Langwell as a shepherd. In 1793 he registered the birth of their son at Latheron parish (sadly the mother is unnamed)! This means their son Alexander Cleugh was likely born in Langwell. Alexander became a shepherd and married Davina McKay (1827) and had a daughter named Esther Cleugh who married another shepherd, Thomas Hymers both of whom were living and working at the Braemore estate in 1871.
I would love to learn more about them and potentially organise an ancestral pilgrimage with more family members if possible. Would love to know if they were original to the highlands or imported from the lowlands? Were they complicit in the clearances? I hope not! What breed of sheep did they shepherd? How difficult were their lives? Unfortunately the book is bit outside of my budget and I don't have a lot of time to read and research further.
